Federal budget cuts not good news for the University sector

I am currently on maternity leave, and when I am not I work in the tertiary education sector – a scientist who has veered into management, but who steadfastly believes in research.

These cuts are devastating.

I am not utterly naive.  I see what is happening in Europe and around the world.  I know that fiscal restraint is necessary.  But fundamentally research underpins so much of everyday life and future growth, in an almost invisible manner.  For example the reason you can read this blog post is because of research that pioneered the DARPAnet the forerunner to the Internet.  Fully funded research that ultimately creates industry after industry.

These cuts are a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face.  Especially when you see where monies are being spent.  Off soap box now!
